When it comes to Navien equipment, it's important to understand their strong reputation for innovation and efficiency. Navien is known for producing some of the most advanced and energy-efficient tankless water heaters, boilers, and combi-boilers in the industry. This high level of performance can be attributed to their advanced water and fire tube heat exchangers, which offer significant benefits in terms of longevity and efficiency.
Despite their impressive technology, Navien products are not without their issues. One common problem is the failure of the exhaust vent gasket at the sheet metal under the vent collar. This can be a significant reliability and safety issue, especially if improper installation or location of the intake and exhaust vents causes cross-contamination of intake air and exhaust.
Another critical issue pertains to failures of the combustion chamber seal at the heat exchanger. These failures are mostly found in Navien's water tube heat exchangers. An oily film on components inside the unit often indicates such failures or improper installation of intake and exhaust vents.
While issues with the combustion chamber seal seem confined to water tube heat exchangers, most Navien models feature these types of exchangers. However, Navien's fire tube heat exchangers present different construction and are less likely to encounter the same problems.
Notably, some users have reported changing their stance significantly on Navien equipment after firsthand experiences. For instance, one user on Long Island started as a strong advocate but flipped 180 degrees after frequently dealing with defective heat exchangers. In one case, a brand new replacement was found to be leaking right out of the box due to a combustion chamber seal failure.
