Metallized paper is a specialized paper featuring a metallic layer on its surface, designed primarily for decorative effects. This unique paper is coated with a thin layer of aluminum, resulting in a matte or glossy appearance that enhances both ornamental and protective qualities.

Methods of Production

There are two primary methods for producing metallized paper:

Lamination Method

This traditional process involves gluing paper to a sheet of aluminum with a thickness ranging from 9 to 12 microns. Due to the excessive aluminum consumption, this method is falling out of favor.

Vacuum Metallization

The preferred method involves heating aluminum or other materials in a vacuum chamber until they vaporize or sublimate, depositing a thin coating layer on the paper. This method significantly reduces aluminum usage by about 300 times compared to the lamination method.

Both methods offer a distinctive metallic finish for packaging, using a mere fraction of the aluminum used in traditional foil applications.

Vacuum Production Method

The vacuum metallization method involves three main steps:

Varnishing

A varnish layer is applied to smooth and prepare the paper for metallization. This pre-coating serves as a barrier and enhances the adhesion of the vaporized metal. The varnish is applied using a gravure printing technique and dried in a hot air unit, adjusting the paper’s moisture level to 2-3%. The paper then passes through freezing rollers to prevent sticking.

Metallization

In the most critical stage, the pre-coated paper is placed in a metallization chamber where an aluminum layer is applied through vaporization or sublimation. The paper emerges with a metallic coat that offers both aesthetic and functional benefits.

Final Varnishing

The metallized paper undergoes a final round of varnishing and re-moisturizing. This includes a corona treatment to improve lacquer adhesion. The lacquer, applied using a gravure printing system, can be dyed to achieve desired colors such as gold. A cooling roll and water treatment ensure the paper attains the required final moisture, making it suitable for various packaging applications. The protective lacquer also serves as a primer for further printing.

Metallized paper’s non-absorbent, water-resistant surface provides excellent barrier properties against light, water vapor, oxygen, and odors.
