Back in IMTS 2012, hidden in a small booth in the back room, I encountered an intriguing innovation that I had been considering creating myself. Offering significant value, although quite pricey at around $20,000 each, these solutions provide a unique capability for handling raw material stock.
These systems allow the handling of CD stock efficiently. You simply open the system to load a new bar, apply a light air charge for optimal cylindricity, and then increase the pressure for tighter milling or longer part processing. This method permits the setting of the bushing tightly for milling operations, retracting the Z-axis, closing the collet, and feeding again without the need for a sub-spindle.
However, be aware of a potential drawback: pressure toggling is required to either zero or open the pressure to properly retract in the Z-axis to prevent clamping too tightly on the bar.
According to a representative using rubber-mounted bush/collets, such as those from Microcentric, Hardinge, and Royal, their system accommodates hot rolled (HR) stocks at the upper end of the collet range. The process includes peeling the stock, pulling it back inside the bushing, and depending on the operation, either clamping lightly and feeding out or clamping tightly to use a Z2 axis for a perfectly round part.
This feature significantly enhances operational options, resolving many challenges related to achieving roundness in parts.

If I were to invest in a new unit, it would certainly feature an on-the-fly adjustable bushing. This option has been available from Tornos since at least 1990, and Star promoted it around a decade ago. Despite its benefits, it's not a widely discussed feature.

When threading rods, there's no universal approach due to the intricacies of thread sizes and standards. Thread dimensions are based on fractions, eliminating the need for complex calculations unless dealing with non-standard threads.
The flat of a thread follows the American standard and unified thread series, with specific classes having different tolerances. For instance, a ¼"-20 2A thread's major diameter theoretically measures .250" with a .0011" allowance, making the top tolerance .2489" and allowing a diameter as small as .2408". Class 1 threads have broader tolerances compared with class 3 threads.
All thread classes are strictly regulated with comprehensive specifications for crucial features.
