Pennzoil is an American motor oil brand currently owned by Shell plc. The former Pennzoil Company had been established in 1913 in Pennsylvania, being active in business as an independent firm until it was acquired by Shell in 2002, becoming a brand of the conglomerate.

History

Early Years and Growth

The company's roots go back to "South Penn Oil Company," founded in Oil City, Pennsylvania by Michael Late Benedum and Joe Trees in May 1889 as part of Standard Oil. After Standard Oil's breakup in 1911, South Penn became independent. Around that time, two companies on the East Coast (1908) and the West Coast (1913) began selling motor oil under the Pennzoil name. The refineries and distributors merged into "The Pennzoil Company" in 1925. By 1955, South Penn Oil had fully acquired Pennzoil Co.

In 1963, South Penn Oil, Zapata Petroleum, and Stetco Petroleum merged into a new "Pennzoil Company," based in Houston with Hugh Liedtke as president. By 1965, the company was marketing its petroleum products globally. In 1968, they leveraged a buyout to acquire United Gas Corporation.

In the 1970s, the company relocated to Pennzoil Place in Downtown Houston, Texas. They also formed POGO (Pennzoil Offshore Gas Operators) in 1977.

In 1984, Pennzoil signed an agreement with Getty Oil to acquire substantial oil deposits. However, the Texaco oil company attempted to disrupt this merger. Pennzoil sued Texaco and was awarded $7.53 billion in compensatory damages and $3 billion in punitive damages, which was later reduced.

Pennzoil agreed to settle for $3 billion after Texaco filed for bankruptcy.

Shell Acquisition

In 1998, Pennzoil's motor oils and services were spun off into a new company, which acquired Quaker State Oil Production Corporation to form "Pennzoil-Quaker State Company." In 1999, their exploration and production business was sold to Devon Energy. In 2002, Royal Dutch/Shell Group acquired Pennzoil-Quaker State Company, and both brands are now marketed under Shell.

Gasoline Marketing

Although primarily an oil company, Pennzoil also sold gasoline. Initially branded as Pennzip, then Pennzoil, their gas stations were mostly found in western Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and West Virginia. After co-branding with Cogo's convenience stores in the 1990s, most Pennzoil gas stations were eventually converted to BP or became independent, unbranded locations. By the mid-2010s, Pennzoil had ceased selling gasoline.

Can You Mix Synthetic Oil With Regular Oil? - Jiffy Lube

If you have ever wondered about mixing motor oils, Jiffy Lube® has the answers. Their technicians frequently help motorists select the right type of motor oil and clarify whether it's okay to mix synthetic with regular oil.

Yes, you can mix synthetic oil with regular oil if occasionally done. If you need to top off your oil to make it until your next scheduled maintenance, mixing is permissible, as long as the added oil matches the recommended weight and viscosity in your owner’s manual.

WHY MIXING OILS IS NOT RECOMMENDED

Oil lubricates engine parts to reduce friction and prevent overheating while also carrying away contaminants. Different oils, such as conventional, synthetic, synthetic blends, and high-mileage oils, are engineered with specific purposes. Mixing can degrade their effectiveness and is generally not cost-efficient.

  1. Adding synthetic oil to regular oil will not enhance the regular oil.
  2. Mixing oils may dilute the benefits of the more expensive synthetic oil.

SHORT-TERM SOLUTION ONLY

If you must mix oils, consider it a short-term fix until you can get a full oil change. Contact Jiffy Lube® for a professional oil change service.

MIXING BRAND OILS
