The Driving Force Behind Automotive Interior Kinematics

The design of automobile interiors has seen significant transformations over the years. From the simplicity of early vehicles to the sophisticated electric and self-driving cars of today, automotive development has greatly influenced modern-day performance and comfort. As automotive technology advances, the focus on the interior driving experience becomes more prominent. People now prefer less clutter and more hidden features for storage. The shift from physical buttons to digital controls is evident, emphasizing comfort and enhancing the overall driving experience.

Despite the constant evolution in vehicle control and console design, some components remain irreplaceable, like the automotive spring. Vulcan has played a pivotal role in this aspect, manufacturing close to a million automotive springs annually.

Vulcan's springs are vital in optimizing a variety of automotive applications, including:

  • Cup holders
  • Glove boxes
  • Shift covers
  • Console sliding mechanisms
  • Overhead storage bins
  • Pop-up monitor mechanisms
  • Door latch systems
  • Electric drivetrain

Our expertise extends beyond simple spring designs. We also specialize in power and clock springs for torque applications. By adopting a collaborative and transparent approach to design for manufacturing, Vulcan creates solutions that refine interior kinematics, eliminate unnecessary costs, and align with our clients' objectives. Our dedicated team and extensive supply base ensure that we meet client demands for quick turnaround and market readiness.

With over 50 years of experience in the automotive industry, Vulcan continuously seeks growth opportunities. We are currently evaluating the benefits of acquiring International Automotive Task Force (IATF) 16949 certification to meet high-quality management standards and enhance customer satisfaction.

Ultimately, we aspire for our inconspicuous springs to contribute to a pleasurable driving experience.

Auto Acoustics 101

While vintage cars have their unique charm, they often lack the creature comforts of modern luxury vehicles, affecting the overall ride quality.

Historical Perspective

Historically, automobile manufacturers paid little attention to interior acoustics and environmental conditions in the passenger cabin. The old insulation and sound-dampening materials were marginally effective and have deteriorated over time. Even today, interior acoustics usually receive focused attention only in luxury vehicles.

Car enthusiasts and custom builders often face several challenges related to sound and heat management, including:

  • Engine, transmission, drive shaft, tire, and exhaust noise entering the cabin
  • Heat from the sun radiating inside
  • Inefficient air conditioning
  • Noise from the trunk and package shelf
  • Noise and heat penetrating through the firewall

Passenger cabin noise is primarily from "airborne noise" and "vehicle-structure noise."

Airborne noise arises from wheel vibration, wind shear, engine mechanics, and transmission harmonics. It enters the cabin through body panel joints. Insulating the interior with sound dampening materials is akin to adding double-pane windows to a home, making temperatures moderate and reducing noise transfer.

Structure-borne noise is caused by the vibration of thin metal body panels due to engine or wheel movement. This noise can be mitigated using aftermarket sound-dampening materials.

Luxury vehicles often come with about 100 pounds of sound and heat control materials integrated throughout the bodywork, aiming to create a "soundproof box."

Acoustic management materials include:

  • Damping materials reduce vibration and noise from body panels. They should be at least half the thickness of the metal or composite material to which they are applied.
  • Absorbers soak up sound and prevent sound waves from reflecting. They are made from dense, fibrous materials like foam, shoddy, fiberglass, and fiber-tech.
  • Reflective Barriers consist of highly reflective material that deflects heat away, protecting equipment and passengers.
  • Absorber-Reflective Barrier Combinations serve multiple purposes, including dampening, absorbing, and reflecting heat. These materials offer high sound deadening and thermal insulation.

Effective acoustic treatment requires well-aligned and sealed body panels, and suspension components in good shape. Common issues include gaps between body panels, poor welds, misaligned panels, and inadequate sealing.

Pre-Cut Acoustishield Kits vs. Universal Acoustishield Kits

There are two ways to insulate a vehicle:

  • Universal Materials require you to design, cut, and install over several days, often involving about 20 to 25% more material than needed to account for fitting and waste.
  • AcoustiShield Pre-Cut and Ready to Install Kits come with everything you need for easy installation and are modeled after OEM vehicles. These kits include Dynamat Xtreme Damper pads, HeatShield barrier insulation panels, spray adhesive, seam tape, and instructions.

QuietRIDE also manufactures Universal AcoustiShield Insulation Kits for vehicles without pre-cut patterns.

Benefits

Benefits of Proper Insulation

Properly insulated vehicles offer reduced interior noise, virtually eliminating exterior heat issues. Regular tests show consistent reductions in cabin noise levels, leading to a quieter, more comfortable ride.

Secondary Benefits

Improved HVAC efficiency: Insulated cabins maintain cooler temperatures, even with lower air conditioner settings. Enhanced audio system performance: Reduced interior noise allows for lower speaker volumes and better sound clarity.
