Identifying a Translucent stone

The term translucent is a bit of a misnomer - a convenient one, but not all that helpful in discussion if the term is taken literally.
As noted, Arks are graded by Specific Gravity. The more dense they are, the finer they can be. super dense. The super hard Arks that transmit a ton of light are called 'Translucent'. But some softer stones transmit light too.
And not every super dense Ark is translucent. You can have a black Ark that is super dense that is every bit as fine as a super dense Translucent. Sometimes these black stones have 'partial translucency', and other times not.
The difference between the black and white stones is that there are impurities in the black stone. One might argue that, on paper, the Translucent must be 'finer' or 'denser' because of the lack of impurities; to me it's a pointless argument with no possible resolve. I grade them the same. For all intents and purposes, their grain structure is virtually identical, yet possibly different at a very microscopic level.
Then there are super dense black Arks that are different than those mentioned above - Slightly different grain to the stone. But still seemingly on-par performance wise.
Washita can be sort of translucent, but the grain structure is different - more open than a soft ark. It's rare to see a true soft Ark that is translucent though. And most Soft Arks will appear to be more porous than a lot of Washita, regardless of actual density or how coarse they are.

The newer, larger one would never put the edge on that the first one did.

It had been decades since I ever cleaned the old oil stones, and I don't even remember the reason why I did, but after cleaning the old Black stone, and holding it up to a light, I discovered, probably after 35 years, that it was actually a Translucent Black. I doubt I had ever heard the term Translucent back when I first bought them.
